Porsche is known today as one of the best sports car brands in the market. When you think Porsche you think fast, luxury, sport, and much more. But what’s behind the flashy speed-racer brand is a rich history full of interesting facts and secrets. Let’s take a look at what came before Porsche as we know it today.
The late Ferdinand Porsche was an Austrian automotive engineer that had an affinity for technology and was especially intrigued by electricity. Did you know that he engineered the world’s first hybrid electric vehicle in 1899? Porsche built the Semper Vivus for Joseph Lohner and Company, based in Vienna. The Semper Vivus was also the first car with brakes on all four wheels.
Later, in 1923 he continued his successful engineering track as technical manager and executive board member at Stuttgart-based Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft Company. His role in this position was to oversee the construction of the Mercedes compressor car. In 1939 Porsche designed the Mercedes-Benz type 80 to be the fastest car on Earth at the time. The car’s projected top speed of 470mph would have broken the world land speed record. However, it never made an attempt due to the project being overtaken by the outbreak of World War 2.
Finally, in 1931 Ferdinand and his son Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche founded their own firm – Porsche. 1934 was when they collaborated to develop the first designs of the Volkswagen car. Passing away in 1951 the business was left in the hands of his son. Since then, the company has become a world powerhouse for producing sports cars.
Though there are endless stories that can be told about the brand, these are some of the most memorable facts and secrets that make up the rich history behind Porsche.
