Electric vehicles (EVs) are taking over the car industry and there is so much to learn as new consumers. EVs are the new shiny toy and everyone wants a part of it. Manufacturers are coming out with new models and consumers like you are excited to get inside of one and see what it is all about. Although it may sound like all fun and games do not forget that it is still a car that will need maintenance and care. Today we are going to go over how to take good care of your electric vehicle!
EVs are for the most part all about the battery. It is the largest, most expensive, and most critical component in an electric vehicle. That being said it is crucial that consumers like you understand battery care. To begin, it is a good idea to keep your battery charge somewhere between 20% and 80%. If you leave the battery charge level too high or too low it will degrade more quickly. Most EVs have a setting where you can choose when you would like the battery to start charging and how full you would like to charge it.
Secondly, as mentioned before, an EV is still a car that needs to be maintained. This means that things like regular tire maintenance and fluid checks are a requirement in order to extend your car’s life. Rotate your tires. Check the air on a regular basis. Have them inspected to assure that they are properly balanced and aligned. For the fluids, just like any other car, check the owner’s manual to find out when things like a coolant system flush is required.
Lastly, we cannot emphasize enough the fact that batteries do not like extreme temperatures! Park in the shade when it is hot. Park in the garage if possible when it is cold. Cold weather will not speed up your EV battery’s degradation but will temporarily reduce its range. Just be cautious and avoid extreme temperatures when you can!
EVs are so cool and they are driving the market right now so if you get your hands on one take these tips into consideration to make it last as long as it possibly can! For more information, please reach out to us at Midtown Autoworks.
