Up until this year, Tesla has dominated the electric luxury car market and they are the first brand that comes to mind when people say, ‘electric car’. Starting this year things will change as more automakers are investing a significant amount of time, money, and effort in building electric and hybrid automobiles. The luxury car market, specifically, will have more electric and hybrid car options for consumers within the next few years. One luxury car brand where you will see a drastic change is in Mercedes. This year is one of the biggest years for Mercedes because in twelve months they will be releasing the EQC SUV and quickly following that will come the AMG versions.
As a reminder, the EQC will be Mercedes’ first electric SUV. Mercedes hopes that this car will compete and eventually take the place of the much-desired Tesla Model X. Mercedes-Benz Cars boss Dieter Zetsche stated, “With the EQC … we are flipping the switch” (Automotive News). Mercedes will spend about $11.63 billion in the expansion of their electric car model portfolio. Mercedes is going all out to provide the best electric luxury SUV. They are no longer focused just on being the best luxury car brand. Now they are focused on being the best electric luxury car brand. Before you cut the check for a new Tesla, you might want to wait as the EQC is a car that is sure to surprise.
Once the Mercedes EQC SUV hits the roads in about a year from now, new models will follow. Specifically the AMG, which basically means more power and better performance. This means that not only will the luxury brand compete with its new technology, but with the new technology will come extra-sporty handling and more stylish aesthetics. Do not overlook Mercedes as they will be in the running for the best electric car brand within the next couple of years.
