When you buy a new car the last thing you are thinking about is it’s value when you decide to get rid of it. Makes sense, but there will come a day when that new car becomes the old car and you will want an upgrade. Because we know that day will come, today we are going to give you a few tips on how to preserve your car’s resale value.

One pretty logical thing you can do is to choose carefully where to park. Door dings, bumper scratches and fading is almost impossible to avoid. No matter how hard you try they are going to happen and they are going to diminish your car’s value. That being said you can minimize these blemishes by parking away from other cars, choosing empty spots at the far end of parking lots as often as possible. You can also minimize those dings and dents by choosing spots that leave your car less vulnerable to passing or turning vehicles. Choose a parallel spot at the end of a row if there are no empty side-by-side stalls. Keep your car parked in a garage if you have one or in the shade under a tree to avoid the harsh effects of ice and sun.

Even if you are extra careful in choosing where to park, sometimes you just get bad luck and you end up getting a small ding or dent. It is ok. The best way to handle it is to get that ding or dent fixed immediately. We recommend getting these repaired as soon as possible because one dent can lead to two, two can lead to three, and soon your respect for your ride diminishes, which only leads to less care and lost value.

The last thing we advise you to do in order to preserve the resale value of your car is to take care of the inside just as well as you take care of the outside. Regularly shaking out the mats, removing the garbage and giving the dash a wipe every now and then will keep the interior looking fresh and your respect for the cabin high. The better you keep the interior now, the better it will look when it comes time to sell.

In short, try to have the same mentality and respect for your car as you did when you first drove it off the lot. Doing so will only help your car’s resale value later on down the line.
