Servicing your radiator is one of the most important things you can do for your car to keep it running happy and healthy. It is important to service your radiator because your car’s engine burns fuel constantly. Temperatures inside the combustion chamber can reach up to 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooling system protects your engine by moving this potentially harmful heat to the outside air. In order to do this a mixture of water and antifreeze circulates through the engine block. This coolant then absorbs heat from the engine and is flowed by the water pump through hoses to the radiator. When the radiator transfers the engine heat to the outside air, the coolant circulates back to the engine and continues the cycle.
To keep your radiator from falling into deep disrepair here are some things you can do:
- Keep the coolant levels filled to the appropriate level at all times. Remember to always administer coolant with a 50/50 water mix.
- Keep the radiator cap secure. The purpose of the cap is to keep the entire coolant chamber pressurized.
- To save time and money get into the habit of having your radiator serviced every time you take your vehicle in for a tire rotation or an oil change.
- Flush your radiator and have it filled on an annual basis. Flushes are required to rid your radiator of particle buildup and prevent clogging. If flushes are not performed then the buildup can spill throughout the entire cooling system. This could result in degradation and wearing down of the cooling system while preventing it from functioning properly.
Bottom line is this – radiator upkeep should be a priority. If you have any questions regarding servicing your radiator or any other car service please do not hesitate to reach out to us here at Midtown Autoworks. We are here to help.
