Electric Vehicles (EVs) are flooding the market. Tesla started this new trend and their EVs were the new shiny toy. Now, pretty much all car manufacturers are making EVs and taking market share. Soon there will be an EV to suit the needs of every driver. That being said choosing the right EV will become harder and harder with so many options. There is a lot to think about and it can be kind of like a new language if you are new to EVs. Today we are going to go over the basic things you need to consider before getting yourself an EV.

The first thing you need to think about is where you will charge up. For example, do you live in a home with a dedicated space where your EV charging station can be installed? Or does your employer provide workplace charging for employees? If the answer is yes to either of these then you do not have much to worry about because you will charge at home or at the office and your EV will be ready to go pretty much at all times. However, if you do not have a dedicated space to charge up, the decision to buy an EV becomes more complex. There is more to figure out based on your circumstances and getting an EV without having a reliable charging strategy can lead to disappointment.

You also need to consider range. It is important to consider how far you reasonably need to drive between charges. Underestimating your range can lead to constant range anxiety as you will often think about how soon you need to find a charger. On the flip side, buying an EV with too much range can also be costly. Why carry the extra weight of a high-capacity battery if you do not need it?

Lastly, research whether or not you qualify for incentives. State, local, and utility incentives vary based on where you live. Some give you a break at the time of purchase. Some make you wait until you file your taxes every year. Basically, knowing which incentives you qualify for can help you set the right car-buying budget and mindset.

Take these things into consideration if you are looking to get an EV. Doing your research and really thinking about what getting an EV means will help your final decision. For more information on EVs please reach out to us here at Midtown Autoworks
