AMG stands for Aufrecht Melcher Brobaspach. The first two words refer to the founders’ last names and Brobaspach is a city in Germany. The meaning is so much more. AMG is any Mercedes-Benz with a specific trim and tuning, leading to finer handling, more power, and a sportier look. AMG is basically the best of the best that Mercedes-Benz has to offer inside and out.
Mercedes-Benz makes six different AMG engines. They are called:
- Handcrafted 6.0L V12 Biturbo Engine (M279)
- Can be found in the Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 sedan.
- AMG Enhanced 3.0L V6 Biturbo (M276)
- Can be found in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 43 coup and the GLC 43 4Matic.
- Handcrafted 2.0L Inline-4 Turbo (M133)
- Can be found in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 45 and the GLA 35 4matic.
- Handcrafted 4.0L V8 Biturbo (M177)
- Can be found in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S sedan, E G3 S wagon, GT 63 S 4-door coupe, and the GLC 63 4matic.
- Handcrafted 4.0L V8 Biturbo with Dry Sump Lubrication System (M178)
- Can be found in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, the GT C, GT R, and the GLC 63 4matic.
- Handcrafted 5.5L V8 Biturbo (M157)
- Can be found in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63.
AMG carries the brand’s “One Man, One Engine” philosophy which refers to how one person has their sole attention on one engine until completed. Of course this is not the case with mass production but that is the ideology that AMG was built around.
