We understand that bringing your car in to get looked at for every little thing can be expensive. If you are not a car expert we highly recommend that you come to us for any diagnosis, repair, or maintenance issue. However, if you are handy, like to get your hands dirty, and have worked on cars in the past there are some things you can do at home. If you have the knowledge, why not save a couple of bucks and work right in your garage! If you are one of those people, this article is for you. Today we are going to list some of the most essential tools you will need if you decide to work on your car at home.
Every car mechanic has a socket set! Not just a socket wrench but a fully stocked socket set. A set will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Your home socket set should be one with at least 6mm to 19mm sockets, extensions, a ratchet, and Allen keys.
You should also get yourself a good torque wrench. A torque wrench sets nuts to their proper tightness, which will prevent damage to bolts, prevent any slippage, and make it easier to remove the nut in the future. Torque wrenches are used to install tires and can also be used on numerous components under the hood like the engine.
Lastly, we recommend that you get yourself good pliers and wire cutters. If you are working on any electrical part on your car like headlights or the stereo, you will need these tools. Similar to a socket set, you should get yourself a kit or a few different kinds because you never know what you will need to complete your project. You can find good pliers and cutters at many hardware stores like The Home Depot, Lowes, or Harbor Freight.
These three tools are must haves when working on your car at home. You simply will not be able to do anything without them. There are more tools you will probably need but these three are the most important. Please remember, if you decide to work on your car at home you should have a background working on cars or have some type of field experience before getting your hands dirty. Inexperience could lead to major damage to your car.
