Porsche has a long and successful history in customer racing and they do not plan on slowing down any time soon. In fact, at the IAA auto show in Munich, Porsche revealed what they are calling the Mission R. A Porsche concept racing car that is unique because it hints at the all-electric direction of Porsche’s future customer racing vehicles. Today we are going to highlight some of the coolest things about the Mission R concept racecar.
According to Car and Driver, the Mission R will be similar in size to the 718 Cayman. The difference is that the Mission R will be a bit wider and will have 1073 horses! At the auto show Porsche claimed the Mission R to go from zero to 62mph is less than 2.5 seconds and have a top speed of over 186mph. Its electric properties will allow this racer to recharge from 5 to 80 percent in less than 15 minutes thanks to its 900 volt electrical architecture.
Being a racecar means that the design of the Mission R is like no other ordinary Porsche. For example, Porsche’s designers and racing engineers worked side by side from the get-go to make this model one of a kind. Instead of sticking in a roll cage as an afterthought, the Mission R’s carbon-fiber composite cage is integrated into the structure of the car itself. This makes it visible within the roof in what Porsche describes as an exoskeleton.
Like most cars presented at auto shows, consumers and fans will not see this for years. In this case, probably not until 2025 or 2026. The Mission R is currently still a running prototype. That being said if this makes its way to production this model could be one for the ages.
