Cars that are maintained properly throughout their lifetime often make it past the 100k mile mark. Putting 100k miles on your car is a huge accomplishment but that also means that your maintenance habits need to be adjusted. Older cars often require a different kind of care and more care in general. Today we are going to highlight ways to maintain your oldie but goodie.

Oil changes should be the first priority for cars with over 100k miles. Motor oil is crucial to the health of your car’s engine as oil keeps it lubricated, cool, and working properly. Regular oil changes and top offs are a must. Switching to synthetic oil after 100k miles is a good idea but there is no single best oil for cars over 100k miles. The right oil depends on the make, model, year, driving habits, and condition of your engine. Older cars need an oil change every 3 months or every 3k miles, whichever comes first.

If your car made it past the 100k mile mark, that is probably because you took care of it since it was brand new. Now is not the time to let up! Aside from oil changes be mindful of the other things as well. Do not let the little things pile up. It is a good idea to have your entire car inspected at each oil change and replace parts as they wear out. Do not wait until the last minute. Keep an eye on things like filters, spark plugs, belts, hoses, gaskets, shocks, etc. Keep your car going by paying attention to the little things.

Lastly, give your car a break if you can. Avoid long road trips, do not drive recklessly, and stay clear of things like steep inclines and off roading. 100k miles is a long life for your car so keep it going by essentially “babying” it until it’s true end of life.

You should be proud if you get your car to 100k miles. If you want to keep it going for another 100k, take these tips into consideration and you will be off to a great start.
