Nowadays all the Porsche models you typically hear about are the 911 and the Cayenne. Granted these are both beautiful models with the newest technology and features but remember that the Porsche brand has been producing cars since 1931. Porsche has other cars that deserve attention and appreciation other than the newer modern models so let’s take a look at some old school Porsches. Specifically, the Boxster, the 914, and the 928.
The Boxster: A Porsche that came out with its first version in the mid to late 90’s and was one that sold over 300,000 models. The Boxster was also known as being one of the most affordable Porsche models at the time at ~$40k – $50k. In the early 2000’s Porsche made a few improvements to the Boxster with greater horsepower and suspension. Boxsters popular in the current market are the 2003 Boxster S models that go for ~$15k – $16k.
The 914: A model that consists of four variants that came out between 1970 and 1976. The 914 sold over 100,000 models with the most desirable model being the six cylinder 914-6. Today these cars are typically collector items but are still fun to drive if you find one in good condition. Popular on the market now for collectors are the 1975 Porsche 914 2.0. Prices range based on condition.
The 928: Porsche’s first production car with a V-8 engine. The 928 was definitely one of the more popular models. Horsepower on the later 928s crept up to 350. What halted the model’s success was the cost and frequency of repairs. Repair complications included frequent timing belt and bearing replacement, water pump and front seal replacement, and torque tube bearing failures. Popular on the market now are 1988 Porsche 928S4s. Prices range from ~$17k – $18k.
