The recent storms that have passed through California has caused damaged neighborhoods, infrastructure, and highways. One of the most common road damages that is caused by rain are potholes. Potholes are created when groundwater seeps into the ground underneath the pavement. If the water freezes, it will expand, thus causing the pavement to expand, bend and crack. When the ice melts, gaps or voids are left in the surface under the pavement. As this process is repeated, the pavement continues to weaken (AAA). So, what is the best way to drive safely with potholes on the roads and what can you do if your car is damaged by these potholes? We will answer those questions for you today.

Most of the time you do not see potholes coming. Because of that, do your best to 1) drive more cautiously and 2) improve your visibility. Increase the distance between you and the car in front of you. Look into the distance at the road ahead of you and the car ahead of you to better see and navigate the upcoming potholes. Make sure your headlights and your windshield wipers are clean and working properly. It is always better to drive slowly if you suspect potholes and if you are able, hit the pothole squarely. If you hit a pothole at an angle, it is more likely to damage your car.

If your car is damaged by potholes, Caltrans may reimburse you up to $10,000. ABC7 reported this news in mid-March. A damage claim can be filed directly with the agency by anyone who believes that “the action or inaction” of the California Department of Transportation “has caused him or her monetary loss,” according to dot.ca.gov.
