Fall is here and winter is right around the corner. That means the weather is changing and rain is inevitable. One of the most important things you need to do to prepare for fall and winter is make sure that your car is ready! Today we are going to go over what dealerships, mechanics, automakers, and even first responders advise when it comes to road safety.

The first thing you should do is determine the condition and quality of your tires. Remember that roads are more slippery when wet so your tires need maximum gripping power. Test the tread on your tires by using the penny trick. Simply insert the penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you do not see Lincoln’s hair, your tread is in good condition. You will need new tires if you see Lincoln’s head and hair.

You also need to make sure your brakes are working properly. Coming to a complete stop in the rain takes longer than in dry so it is important to keep them in optimal condition. Have your brake components checked and obtain brake services regularly. If you have not taken your car in for service within the past year, to stay safe this fall and winter season go get your car looked at! Any squealing or grinding noises warrant an immediate inspection.

Lastly, make sure your basic car functions are working. Check the condition of your windshield wipers because being caught in a rainy downpour with poorly working blades is dangerous. Similarly, properly working headlights are super important. In inclement weather you need to be able to see. In heavy rain or fog, the beam of your car’s headlights may be the only way other drivers know you are on the road. Basic car functions are just as important as your tires and brakes when weather is bad.

We have already seen rain this year and more is on the way so be prepared by making sure your car is ready for the changing weather. For more car safety tips or to get your car looked at before winter please contact us here at Midtown Autoworks.
