Holiday season is around the corner and that means it is winter time! Time for the cold, rain, ice, and even snow. The change in weather can really impact your car and your safety on the road so today we are going to go over one of the best ways to prepare for the winter. That being getting new tires. Not just new tires but wintertires.
Most vehicles are fitted with all season tires. All season tires are standard because they provide a relatively quiet ride, have a good tread life, and have great year-round performance. Most of the time you will be fine just with your all season tires. However, when it comes to driving in winter weather, having the right tires matter. Cold temperatures, rain, ice, and snow are best met with best tires because they are designed to perform in winter conditions. Here is why.
To begin, in cold temperatures the tread rubber on all season tires become less able to provide sufficient traction. The tread rubber on winter tires is designed to remain flexible, allowing the tire to grip the road better.
Another big difference is that winter tires have a deeper tread depth and unique tread patterns. Deeper tread depths are beneficial because it reduces ice or snow buildup and provides better traction. Tread patterns are beneficial because they are designed to channel ice, snow, or slush and expel water.
Lastly, winter tires have an increased number of biting edges that all season tires do not. Biting edges are the tiny slits in the tread that provide traction on slippery roads.
If you live in an area where winter conditions can get really bad, consider winter tires. It may seem like an over the top precaution but it could end up being an essential safety measure that could save your life.
